This anime has inspired me to become a swimmer (although not competitively). Right now I am still learning breast stroke.
Blending with water.. is a sensation you COULD NEVER feel in any other sports..
When I was a kid I used to swim and was pretty good at it. Remember when they were still in their old swimming team? I was at their age or maybe even younger when I started to swim. I truly enjoyed every bit of it..
My friend who watched it when it first came out tweeted about it, I tried watching it and I thought it was stupid due to the amount of fanservice in it. I immediately stopped watching and went on with my life.
Then after it got really popular, like immensely popular, I rewatched it and tried to ignore the fanservice. (I am a semi-fujoshi, don’t get me wrong, but I tend not to watch any BL anime because I pair up characters in straight anime instead)
The animation is amazing. The animation, especially the water seems so real that it makes me want to jump into the water and interact with the characters. Then I was immediately reminded of how much I wanted to become an athlete when I was young- free! Iwatobi swim club had a huge impact on my life.
OK. Let’s get to the main point of the post.
Whether you are a swimmer or a non-swimmer, this anime is extremely humurous, has a pretty cliche plot, good-looking characters, and like I’ve mentioned before, very great animation. It can be cheesy at times, though. I guess if “friendship among boys” isn’t your thing, this anime is not recommended. There are a lot of scenes which involve guys being touchy and friendly to each other, and also a sneak peek of muscles, biceps/triceps. Oh.. don’t forget.. close-up shots of muscular guys in SPEEDOS. Yeah. Speedos.
Other than that, it’s the first swimming anime I have ever seen, so I rate it 8.00 out of 10.00. If only some of the characters were a little bit more mature (I forgot to mention some of the characters are really wimpy and childish), I would have rated it higher.
Note (skip if you wish)
Have you ever read reviews by non-fangirls? Yeah, this is one of them. I am not an otaku, I don’t go around bashing yuri, I enjoy anime as a PERSON, not as a fujoshi, weaboo ,otaku, whatever nickname is appropriate.
But to be honest If this weren’t a swimming anime I would have been much more skeptical about it. Aren’t swimming guys supposed to wear revealing garments? And.. last but not the least. I’ve read stuff like Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru, a harsh 18+ sports manga which involves extreme violence, humor, and language.
